Network Anti-Virus Protection Feature

Network Anti-virus By their nature, anti-virus products typically require regular, active maintenance on every PC. When a new virus is discovered, all anti-virus software deployed within an organization must be updated with the latest virus definition files; failure to do so severely limits the effectiveness of anti-virus software and disrupts productive work time. With more than 50,000 known viruses and new virus outbreaks occurring regularly, the task of maintaining and updating virus protection can become unwieldy. Unfortunately, many small to medium businesses dont have adequate IT staff to maintain their anti-virus software. The resulting gaps in virus defenses may lead to data loss and decreased employee productivity.

The widespread outbreaks of viruses, such as "ILOVEYOU" and Melissa, illustrate the problematic nature of virus defense for small and medium businesses. Users without the most current virus definition files allow these viruses to multiply and infect many other users and networks. SonicWALL Network Anti-Virus prevents occurrences like these and offers a new approach to virus protection. SonicWALLs family of firewall appliances constantly monitors the version of the virus definition file and automatically triggers download and installation of new virus definition files to each users computer. In addition, the SonicWALL restricts each users access to the Internet until they are protected, in essence acting as an enforcer of the companys virus protection policy. This new approach ensures the most current version of the virus definition file is installed and active on each PC on the network, preventing a rogue user from disabling the virus protection and potentially exposing the entire organization to an outbreak.

Network Anti-Virus Features and Benefits

Network Wide 24x7 Virus Protection.
Based on Network Associates' McAfee VirusScan technology, SonicWALL Network Anti-Virus automatically and transparently updates the virus software on every computer on the network, providing around-the-clock protection from new viruses as soon as the cure is available.

Enforcement of Virus Policy on All Windows PCs.
Virus protection is enforced for any Windows computers on the LAN. If a user removes or deactivates the virus protection software on their computer, it is automatically reinstalled or reactivated the next time they try to access the Internet.

E-mail Attachment Filtering.
Enables custom rule configuration for filtering potential virus carrying E-mail attachments. The network administrators can either delete or disable E-mail attachments based on a centralized list of file extensions.

E-mail Attachment Filtering Alert Service
E-mail Attachment Filtering Alert Service provides attachment blocking on inbound SMTP and POP3 e-mail protocols. For example, this feature can provide Anti-Virus protection for e-mail received via Yahoo or Hotmail accounts. Additionally, when this service is selected, the SonicWALL automatically blocks virus-specific attachments during rapid outbreaks, even before Anti-Virus signature (DAT) files are available.

Reduced Administrative Costs.
Save time and money in installation and maintenance. It's no longer necessary to manually update anti-virus software for every computer on your network, allowing your valuable IT resources to focus on other issues.

Protection Against Viruses from All Sources.
Unlike other anti-virus products that scan files only at the gateway, SonicWALL Network Anti-Virus provides protection at both the gateway and the desktop. This method detects and cleans viruses from all sources including any vulnerable back doors.

Trojan Horse Protection.
"Trojan horse" viruses appear to be benign files often sent as E-mail attachments, but in reality are malicious viruses. These Trojans can be used to open a path into the LAN for the sender, or even take over computers on the network to be used in attacks on other remote networks. SonicWALL Network Anti-Virus detects and deletes these Trojans before they can take control of your network.

Comprehensive Virus Alerting and Logging.
With SonicWALL Network Anti-Virus, the administrator is kept abreast of newly discovered serious viruses. In the case of a widespread infection, policies can be put in place to automatically update anti-virus software to a version with the fix before the network is infected. When virus alerts are issued, the information is logged in the SonicWALL Internet security appliance and an E-mail alert is sent to the administrator with detailed information on the virus.
